ATF and CVT Fluid Are Not the Same Thing
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid are both transmission lubricants, but they are designed for different transmission technologies and friction requirements.
The correct fluid must be selected from the vehicle manufacturer’s specification. Similar colour or viscosity does not mean two transmission fluids are interchangeable.
What Is ATF?
ATF is used in conventional automatic transmissions and in some power-steering or hydraulic applications where specifically approved. Different ATF specifications exist, including older Dexron-type fluids and newer low-viscosity or multi-vehicle formulations.
What Is CVT Fluid?
CVT fluid is formulated for continuously variable transmissions. These transmissions may use belts, chains, pulleys and specialised friction systems that require fluid characteristics different from conventional ATF.
Why the Correct Specification Matters
The transmission fluid performs several jobs at once:
- Lubrication
- Hydraulic pressure transfer
- Cooling
- Friction control
- Wear and oxidation protection
Using a fluid that does not meet the required specification can affect shift quality, friction behaviour or transmission durability.
Can ATF Be Used in a CVT?
Not unless the vehicle manufacturer explicitly specifies that fluid for the transmission. A conventional ATF should not be substituted for CVT fluid simply because both are transmission oils.
What Information Should You Check?
- Vehicle make, model and year
- Transmission type
- Manufacturer fluid specification
- Existing fluid reference where available
- Service manual or transmission label

Frequently Asked Questions
Is all ATF the same?
No. ATF products can meet different specifications and friction requirements.
Can CVT fluid replace Dexron III ATF?
No, not by default. Use the exact fluid type and specification required by the transmission manufacturer.
Does transmission-fluid colour identify the specification?
No. Colour should not be used as the primary method for choosing a transmission fluid.
Prepared by the INER-G Technical Team. Transmission-fluid selection should always be verified against the vehicle or transmission manufacturer’s current requirements and the product technical data.
